Rally means routes closed to walkers

SEVERAL rights of way in the Lake District National Park will be closed next month when a major rally takes place in Grizedale Forest. More than 100 cars will compete in the Grizedale Stages Rally 2005 on Saturday, December 4, using forest tracks on the western side of Grizedale Forest and on Forestry Commission land at Broughton Moor. As a result, all forest footpaths, bridleways and unsurfaced roads between Coniston Water and the Hawkshead to Satterthwaite Road and two others at Broughton Moor will be closed during the event. The Forestry Commission will also be closing most permitted paths in the affected forests. More details on the rally route and car parks can be found on www.grizedalestages.co.uk

Kendal's own Athen's marathon winner

Paula Radcliffe's shattering demise in the sweltering heat of the Athens Olympic Marathon on Sunday stunned the British public, but came as no surprise to Westmorland Gazette assistant editor Richard Belk, who overcame similar conditions to triumph on the same course 25 years ago.
