A RETIRED civil engineer has plucked a prestigious banjo-playing award in America.
Hugh Connor, 53, of Levens was over the pond on holiday when he decided to enter the West Virginia State Festival banjo playing competition.
Mr Connor, a local player in the Limestone Cowboys, faced off against talented locals who have been playing the instrument all their lives, but still managed to play his way into third place in the competition.
“The people that came first and second were nationally known, and played in bands that had toured in England,” said Mr Connor.
Mr Connor, who has been playing banjo 16 years, played two songs in the competition; Peach Bottom Creek and Cole Creek March.
“I got a good applause. I would never have thought I would do so well beforehand but after I had played I knew I had done a good renditions of the songs,” he said.
