GENEROUS school children from Levens enjoyed a Harvest Festival with a difference this year when they donated their dinner money to a worthwhile cause.

As always, pupils at Levens CE Primary School gathered in St Johns Church for the annual harvest celebration to perform autumn songs, poems and readings to the congregation.

However, this year, as well as raffling off huge pumpkins and harvest produce to local people, the children willingly donated their dinner money to the Bishop of Carlisle's Harvest for the Hungry Appeal, which supports dairy farmers in Haiti and a campaign to provide children in Bangladesh with an education. In return for their generosity, Clare Neal, foundation stage teacher at the school, served the children a simple meal of bread, cheese and fruit, kindly supplied by Asda on Burton Road in Kendal.

“We made a total of £130 for the charity and everybody enjoyed their lunch, though admittedly they were looking forward to teatime,” said Ms Neal. “This is exactly the thought provoking, tummy rumbling result we were hoping for. It really is a charity we can relate to, as being surrounded by dairy farms in such an idyllic spot as Levens- the children appreciate the school meals and education they are given here.”
