Kendal fire crews celebrate awards

Kendal fire station is aglow with pride after winning double honours in the annual Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service awards.

At an Oscar-style' ceremony at Penrith's North Lakes Hotel, 16 members of Kendal and Milnthorpe's fire crews won a joint award for operational excellence for their efforts at last year's train crash when a London to Glasgow Virgin express train derailed near the South Lakeland village of Grayrigg.

And three employees at Kendal Fire Station won an award for community leadership after developing an innovative campaign to alert as many people as possible to the dangers of not having a smoke alarm.
