WALKERS enjoying one of Eden's most popular routes will be able to enjoy their lunch in the shadow of Podgill Viaduct from next week.

The Northern Viaduct Trust has created a new picnic site below the imposing structure, near Kirkby Stephen, which will be officially opened by director of Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Peter Bullard, on May 22.

The viaduct trust is also planning to improve the Northern Viaducts Round Walk by creating a small car park at the western end of the route at Stenkrith.

The opening ceremony will take place at 11am.
