DESPITE the chilly, unpredictable Easter weather,
Whittington Point-to-Point races saw record entries and some of the most exciting racing for a number of years.
Hardy supporters of the sport turned out in good number and were rewarded with some competitive contests. Four of the six races on the card were decided by less than a length at the winning post. And in an innovation this year there were pony races for younger riders over a flattened five-furlong stretch to get proceedings under way.
Closest winner of the afternoon was in the Confined when Anaczar held on by a neck for Alastair McEntryre, while the most convincing margin featured in the Ladies with Val Jackson steering Robbers Glen to a five-length success.
Fairground attractions and the usual array of food and trade stands, including the popular champagne and seafood bar, ensured there was enough to interest everyone.
The Holcombe Hunt meeting at Whittington, which had been doubtful, has been confirmed to go ahead on Saturday, April 19 (2pm start).
