MP's duathlon for hospital

MP TIM Farron will swap his suits for lycra on Saturday when he takes part in a duathlon across South Lakeland to raise money for hospital campaigners.

The MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale is planning to cycle 15.5 miles from the heart of the Langdales to Staveley, before running the remaining eight miles to Westmorland General Hospital.

Mr Farron hopes his efforts will help raise some of the £5,000 needed for a legal 'fighting fund' which the NHS SOS - Save our Services group will use to bring a legal challenge against the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust's plans to close WGH to acute medical admissions.

The group, which believes lives will be put at risk because of the cuts, have threatened legal action if the trust does not proceed correctly with the closures - which have begun with the gradual closure of Ward 11 and will end with the shutting of the coronary care unit.

A collection at the Birdcage in Kendal last Saturday raised several hundreds of pounds for the cause. And in the event that the NHS SOS group is unable to proceed with its legal challenge, any proceeds of saturday's fundraisers will be given to the South Lakeland branch of the British Heart Foundation charity.

The duathlon will begin at 12pm at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Langdale on Saturday and should end in Kendal at around 3pm.

Mr Farron is urging hospital supporters to join him on the duathlon, or to sponsor him. Anyone who wishes to make a donation can do so by contributing on the day or by sending cheques payable to Westmorland Heart and Soul, c/o The Treasurer, High House, Chapel Lane, Crook, Kendal LA8 9HT. For more information, sponsors can also contact John Studholme on 01539-740511.
