Reserve visitors asked to "leave it off"

HOMEOWNERS are being encouraged to turn off their electrical appliances at a special event at a North Lancashire nature reserve.

The RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss in Silverdale is holding a series of event a part of the UK's first Energy Saving Day, on February 27 a nationwide campaign to reduce unneeded energy use across the country over 24 hours by switching electric items such as TVs and stereos from standby to off.

Visitors to the reserve can find out how energy is saved on the site by joining in a variety of family activities and following the energy trail on February 23, 24 and 27 and on March 1 and 2.

The reserve is already reducing its food miles by serving local cake in the tearoom, and stocking locally sourced gifts in the shop.

Visitors are also encouraged to use of public transport such as the nearby Silverdale railway station and the Carnforth Connect Bittern Bus.

Events organiser Jen Walker said: "When we all act together, we will see how easy it is to leave it off', and what a large chunk we can take out of the UK's energy use and the greenhouse gases produced."

"The RSPB will be urging everyone in the North West who wants a safe climate future for birds and wildlife to join the action on E-Day, and to keep saving energy for long afterwards."
