Bikeability instructors 'urgently needed'

TWO hundred volunteer cycling instructors are being sought in Cumbria to deliver the new Bikeability programme, successor to the old Cycling Proficiency Certificate.

The upgraded scheme, first piloted in 2006, began to be rolled out nationally last year.

Known as "the cycling proficiency for the 21st century", it is now the only government approved and nationally recognised award for cycle training for both children and adults.

But the programme can only be delivered by qualified instructors accredited to national standards.

In Cumbria, the cycle training is currently provided through Cyclewise and Better Ways To School (BWTS), which say volunteer Bikeability instructors are "urgently needed".

Chris Wills, of BWTS, said: "We want to encourage existing cycling instructors to move toward Bikeability as well as anyone else who would like to volunteer and gain Bikeability accreditation."
