IT’S being billed as the hottest event of the summer – the first ever Lakes Chilli Fest to be held at Levens Hall next weekend (August 16 and 17).
On the menu will be a chance to sample the latest contender for the title of the ‘world’s hottest curry’ which has been cooked up by the boss of the Cark-based Chilli Pepper Company, Ged Fowler, and Starly’s Spices’ duo Steven Higginson and Carly Jones, from Orton.
The trio are bidding for a place in the Guinness Book of Records with ‘Satan’s Ashes’ which uses the Bhut Jolokia, officially the world’s hottest chilli registering a whopping 1,001,304 Scoville heat units, the internationally-recognised measure for chillies.
The festival promises a feast of flavour with Sri Lankan, Indian, Caribbean, Chilean, Mexican and Italian foods on sale.
Some of Cumbria’s own food producers will also be turning up the heat for the occasion by providing a fiery twist on local delicacies including the wonderfully spicy Levens Hall Morocco Ale and Cumberland sausages with chillies.
Chilli aficionados are expected to travel from far and wide for the event, which Ged is hoping will ultimately rival the world-famous West Dean chilli festival at Chichester which attracts a global audience.
“It would be great to think that the Levens Hall festival could become that popular,” said Ged.
The weekend programme includes demonstrations by ‘Cook in Cumbria’ chef Yelly de Jong, Levens Hall head gardener Chris Crowder, Daleside Brewery, local food producer Ricardo Rodriguez and Ged Fowler from the Chilli Pepper Company.
There will be demonstrations of salsa dancing on both days too – and a chance to take in some tuition.
Saturday’s live music is Milnthorpe Steel Band and on Sunday visitors will be able to chill to the sounds of Manchester salsa band PA Gozar.
Susie Bagot, of Levens Hall, has been delighted by the enthusiastic response to news of the chilli fest.
“We are looking forward to hosting a hot and lively weekend for locals and visitors in this beautiful setting.”
The chilli fest is open from 10am to 4pm each day. The £7 admission fee includes entry to the famous Levens Hall topiary gardens (free admission for under 16s accompanied by an adult).
