A RARE collection of seventeenth century silver coins discovered on the outskirts of York is being sold at auction next month.
The coins, which were discovered during World War II, are known as Thalers and were most likely made in Bavaria in Southern Germany in the 1690s.
Created from high quality silver, all of the coins have loops attached to them, which suggests that they once formed part of a piece of decorative jewellery.
It is not known how the coins came to be found so far from their German origins, but they were unearthed by a Yorkshire farmer and are now being sold at Tennants Auctioneer’s specialist coin sale by his daughter, with a presale estimate of between £500 and £800.
The auction takes place at Tennants Auction Centre in Leyburn on September 16.
