Youngest triumphs at 'Tri Sprint'

FIFTEEN-year-old Beau Smith was the youngest person in Sunday's Kendal Sprint Triathlon and also the fastest.

Torrential rain and high winds meant that last year's course records were safe despite some incredible performances.

Talented Smith from Yealand Redmayne, near Carnforth, took the almost 100-strong field by storm, beating older, seasoned competitors in the 750m swim, 20k bike ride and 5k run for a winning time of 1hr 8min 29sec.

Smith, who set the fastest swim, comfortably beat the next competitor home by 45 seconds.

Ashley Norie (Polanet X) and Garrie Prosser (Team Purple Cobra) were second and third respectively to complete the podium positions.

In a very close women's race, the first across the line, Fiona Burnie (Ryton Tri), did not win the event.

Because competitors had to negotiate two sets of traffic lights, the organisers recorded the time the competitor was stationary at the lights and deducted it from the overall time.

Fortunately for Louise Kelly (Leicester Tri), she was held up nine seconds longer than Burnie and on corrected time won the race by seven seconds in 1-15-51.

Another youngster, Victoria Annis, from Leeds, was third in 1-19-54.

Tri Preston used the event as a handicap race in their annual training weekend and Simon Hocking crossed the line followed by six more clubmates within a minute.
