Football - Osman treble in six-nil treat

IT WAS a sweet Easter treat that Kendal Town set before their fans with a 6-0 thrashing of high-flying Marine at the Laskeland Radio Stadium on Monday.

Carl Osman - brother of the Everton midfielder Leon Osman - led the way to goal with a hat-trick, including a penalty.

An own goal opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Paul Byrne's inswinging corner deflected to Darren Brookfield at the far post and went in off his leg before he could react.

Seven minutes later, after Lee Ashcroft's hard-hit shot was blocked, the ball spun free to Osman and he turned and volleyed in a shot that deflected in off a defender.

Town retained a 2-0 lead to half time and took control in the second half with Gareth Arnison twice put through one-on-one with the keeper who saved both efforts.

However, in the 61st minute, Paul Byrne's half-cleared corner fell to Arnison, who hit a low shot back towards goal and Osman stuck out a foot from close range to turn it home for his second goal.

Left back David Standley made it 4-0 after 69 minutes when Osman's chipped pass found Arnison and he flicked the ball down for Standley to drive home a firm shot from 12 yards.

Man of the match Osman competed his hat-trick in the 79th minute when Kilford's crossfield pass out of defence picked out Paul Fildes and he was brought down as he beat the left back inside the box.

That brought Ricky Newell his second booking and a red card, and Osman stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way with the spot kick.

Two minutes later, it was 6-0 as Arnsion cut inside and had a pot at goal that Michael Cole intercepted to turn and propel past Andy Ralph from eight yards.

Town finished rampant with both Arnison and Fildes going close with headers in the best home display seen this season.

Town, having struggled so often in front of their own fans this season, have now hit 13 goals in the last three home matches.

It was a great display - aided by the Marine defence often looking like the Anthony Gormley statues on Crosby beach! Town passed the ball around and certainly didn't look like a team on the edge of relegation zone. A couple of crucial games coming up and we still need the points.

Great win, Great performance, yes we need to win a few more to be safe, but i think we will be alright now. We are better than we are in the league, the squads quality with a top class manager in charge.
