BIKETREKS is to become main sponsor of The Biketreks Fred Whitton Challenge, a major cycling event on the local calendar.

The event is run in memory of Fred Whitton, who was the Lakes Road Club racing secretary for many years, also the Lakes and Lancs' Division road racing secretary, an ex first cat, a promoter of numerous road races including the Lakes three-day, and an all-round clubman - sadly missed when he died of cancer at the age of 50.

The proceeds of the ride will be donated to the MacMillan Nurses and the Dave Rayner Fund. In it's time the sportive has raised over £115,000 to both charities.

Biketreks in Ambleside has helped the Fred Whitton Challenge from the very first event in 1999 and once again, they will be offering a free mechanical service on the event.

The Biketreks Fred Whitton Challenge is a gruelling 112-mile sportive ride for charity around the English Lake District, taking in six of the major passes en route.

Held on Sunday, May 11 this year, the route starts and finishes at Coniston, and includes the climbs of Kirkstone Pass, Honister Pass, Newlands Pass, Whinlatter Pass, Cold Fell, Irton Pike, and finishes with the brutal Hardknott and Wrynose Passes.
